Forget the apocalypse framing. A household that can manage 72 hours without outside help is not a prepper compound — it is a functional home run by capable adults.
Here is what that actually requires.
Water
One gallon per person per day. A family of four needs twelve gallons for 72 hours. A ceramic gravity filter means you are not dependent on stored water alone — any clean-looking source becomes potable.
Communication
A hand-crank NOAA weather radio. Your phone will work until cell towers lose power or get overloaded. The radio works indefinitely.
Heat and cooking
A propane camp stove and two canisters covers three days of hot meals. A ferro rod means you can light it without a lighter.
Food
Calorie-dense, shelf-stable provisions for each person. You are not trying to eat well for 72 hours — you are trying to eat enough.
Documents
A physical copy of your insurance cards, IDs, bank account numbers, and emergency contacts. Your phone battery will die. Paper will not.
None of this is complicated. All of it is available. The only question is whether your household has done it.
